Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team is investigating a police involved shooting in which two suspects were shot after assaulting a Prince George’s County police officer.
Jeffery Goliath Bright, 23, of the 1300 block of Cleveland Street in Baltimore and the passenger, Rodney Gordon Bailey, 23, of the 1100 block of Penn Street NE Washington, D.C. were charged with the assault on an off duty police officer by dragging him with their vehicle after they were confronted for shoplifting at a local business in College Park. The two males arrested were dressed in women’s clothing at the time of their arrest and were transported to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries. Both have been charged with Theft under $500; additionally, Bright was charged with Second Degree Assault.
On October 16, at approximately 5:20 p.m., an off-duty uniformed officer was working secondary employment at the Rugged Warehouse store located in the 7300 block of Baltimore Avenue in College Park, when he observed two suspects shoplifting from the store. When the officer confronted the suspects at their vehicle, his arm became lodged in the window and the suspects proceeded to drive off; dragging the officer. In an attempt to stop the vehicle, the officer discharged his departmental firearm at the driver. The vehicle came to a stop after striking a parked vehicle and the officer was able to free himself. Both suspects sustained injuries from gun shot wounds and were transported to a local hospital. The involved officer was also transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained from being dragged by the vehicle.
The Prince George’s County Police Officer who discharged his firearm is assigned to the Bureau of Support Services. He has been identified as Police Officer First Class Jonathan Hill, an eight year veteran. He has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy as a result of this incident.
