PRESS RELEASE
Departmental Shooting/Suspect Shot after Attempt Armed Robbery of Armored Truck

Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team is investigating a police involved shooting in which a Prince George’s County police officer shot an armed man after an attempted armed robbery and assault on the employees driving an armored truck in Beltsville.

Toumani Touray Thomas, 32, of the 4800 block of Kansas Avenue in N.W. Washington DC., was arrested after the armed robbery.  He was transported Friday afternoon to a local hospital shortly after the shooting and is listed in stable condition.  He has been charged with First Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, and Use of a Handgun in the Commission of a Felony.

On October 16, 2009, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the suspect approached a Dunbar armored truck in the parking lot of Washington Adventist Hospital and attempted to enter the vehicle.  The employees in the armored truck drove off and alerted authorities of the suspect’s actions. The suspect entered his vehicle and followed the armored truck into the County, cutting off the truck with his vehicle on Powder Mill Road near Evans Trail.  At that point, he stepped out of his vehicle with an assault rifle and began firing shots at the armored truck striking it three times.  During this time a Prince George’s County Police officer arrived on scene, confronted the armed suspect, and fired several rounds at the suspect, striking his vehicle.

The suspect got back into his vehicle with the assault rifle and fled to the location of Manheim Avenue and Baltimore Avenue.  Officers were alerted that the suspect ran into a house in the 5000 block of Lexington Street.  Several occupants of the house were able to flee the residence as the suspect entered.  Officers established a perimeter around the location and a short time later the suspect exited the residence with the assault rifle aimed at officers.  A second officer discharged his firearm at the suspect striking him in the lower body.  An SKS assault rifle was taken from the suspect and he was transported to the hospital.  No other suspects were located in the residence.

Both Prince George’s County Police Officers who discharged their weapons are assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.  They are identified as Corporal Michael Soden, a six year veteran and Corporal Kenneth Fox, a seventeen year veteran.  They have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with departmental policy as a result of this incident.
Prince George’s County Police Chief Roberto L. Hylton commended the officers’ actions by stating, “I am extremely proud of the response of these officers in risking their own safety while confronting this dangerous individual who was threatening the lives of the Dunbar employees.  These officers and all of those involved provided a sound tactical response to this dangerous threat to the community.”

Anyone with additional information about this case is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Special Investigative Response Team at (301) 856-2660.
