Members of the Prince George’s County Youth Commission will attend the Maryland General Assembly session as guests of Senator Joanne Benson (District 24) on Monday, March 5, 2012, 6:00 p.m. at the Maryland State House in Annapolis, Maryland.
Youth Commissioners will receive a tour of the Maryland State House historic rooms and chambers; attend the District 24 Legislative Reception; and observe legislative session. Additionally, Youth Commissioners will have the opportunity to ask questions of state legislators.
Youth Commission Executive Director Dana-Marie Harris says the opportunity for the students to visit the Maryland State House and see, first-hand, how our State government is run, is a welcome one.
“One of our goals for the Prince George's County Youth Commission is to provide students with a vehicle to learn about how the various levels of government are run. We want them to do more than read about government in the pages of a book; we want to bring the government process to life and increase their level of understanding. We are grateful to Senator Benson for her invitation and our commissioners are looking forward to an exciting evening.”
Established by Council Bill 19-2006, the Prince George’s County Youth Commission provides the youth of Prince George's County with a vehicle to learn about government, participate in the process, represent and articulate the needs of youth in the County, and advise the County Council on matters pertaining to the youth and teen population, especially as it relates to County programs.
