The Prince George’s County Council officially declared May 4 – 10 National County Government Week with a proclamation ceremony and “Student Shadow Day” program on Tuesday, May 5, 2009.
“Each year, as a part of National County Government Week, the Council provides opportunities for Prince George’s County students to learn first-hand how County government works. We are excited to have these young people here with us today because they are leaders in their schools and they will be the future leaders of this County,” said Council Chairperson Marilynn Bland (D) – District 9. “It is important for them to witness first-hand how County government works – the role of our citizens and the work of their elected officials. In a few years we just might see a few of them representing us on this Council.”
Students spent the day as “shadows” accompanying their respective Council Member to better understand the daily responsibilities elected officials undertake while in office. The day’s events also included a proclamation ceremony, where students received Council commendations; a tour of the legislative branch offices; participation during Council sessions; and lunch with Council Members.
“This was a very exciting day,” said Edward Burroughs III, a Crossland High School student and student member on the Prince George’s County Board of Education. “Not only did we learn about County government, we had the opportunity to be a part of it. I am thankful to the Council for this opportunity because it is an experience that all of the students will remember.”
Sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo), National County Government Week (NCGW) is an annual celebration of county governments created to raise public awareness and understanding about the role and responsibility of the nation’s counties. Prince George’s County is one of more than 1,000 counties nationwide participating in the week’s activities.
