PRESS RELEASE
County Police Officer Struck and Killed on Bowie Road

Prince George’s County, Maryland… The Prince George’s County Police Department confirmed the death of Cpl. Richard Scott Findley, a 10 year veteran, who was assigned to the Patrol Services District VI Special Assignment Team.  Cpl. Findley was struck and killed this morning while attempting to stop two suspects in a suspected stolen vehicle.

On June 27, 2008, at approximately 11:40 a.m., Cpl. Findley observed a vehicle in the 14700 block of Bowie Road.  Early reports indicate that as he approached the vehicle, the suspects struck the officer and fled in the vehicle, a pickup truck.  Cpl. Findley was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Officers located the vehicle at a nearby apartment complex and four individuals were taken into custody for questioning.  Investigators found evidence of gunfire on the scene but have not yet determined if the officer discharged his issued service weapon.

“The loss of an officer is the hardest thing for any police chief and fellow police officers to deal with,” said Prince George’s County Police Chief Melvin C. High. “I’m asking the public to pray for Cpl. Findley’s family and for our police family.”

Major Daniel Dusseau, Commander, Criminal Investigations Division believes that the suspect vehicle may have struck additional vehicles and is asking anyone with any additional information to contact Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit at (301) 772-4925.

Cpl. Findley, 39, leaves behind a wife and two young children.

For further information, call the Prince George’s County Press Office at (301) 772-4710.
