Fire Fighter/Medic McGown Remains in Critical Condition

Fire Fighter/Medic Daniel McGown

A Prince George’s County Firefighter remains in Critical/Stable condition at the Washington Hospital Center Burn Unit.  Fire Fighter/Medic Daniel McGown, 21 years of age (22 in May 2009) and a 4-year career employee of the Fire/EMS Department sustained severe burn injuries to his face with respiratory involvement while fighting a fire at a Kettering house this morning.  McGown is intubated and sedated.  Doctors at the Burn Unit advised that the next 72 hours will be critical in determining his prognosis.

Fire Fighter Daniel McGown is the son of retired Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department Deputy Fire Chief William “Bill” McGown.  Bill McGown served with the Fire/EMS Department for nearly 25 years before retiring in April 2006.  He is currently serving as the Deputy Director of Public Safety Communications.  Bills daughter, Kimberly McGown Blackistone, is a 7-year career Firefighter/Paramedic with the Department.

Prince George’s County Acting Fire Chief Eugene A. Jones was at the hospital this morning with the McGown family, friends and co-workers.  He stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Daniel McGown, his family and extended fire service family.  The McGown's have a long-standing legacy within our Fire/EMS Department and are considered family among us.  We will continue to pray for his recovery from these injuries and I ask that our citizens and residents, that we are sworn to protect, to do the same.”

Any updated information will be provided in as timely a manner as possible.
