Upper Marlboro, MD – In the wake of the June 22nd microburst in the Bladensburg, Cheverly and Hyattsville, Maryland area and the June 29th derecho that continues to affect the County; the Office of Homeland Security encourages residents to register for the NotifyMe program. NotifyMe Prince George's will deliver important emergency information and updates to your registered devices and will enable participants to receive messages that pertain to amber alerts, severe weather, school and government delays and closings, severe traffic, utility interruptions and emergency preparedness measures.
Our NotifyMe proved effective in warning citizens during the June 22nd microburst by notifying residents prior to the severe weather. A NotifyMe Alert of Severe Weather in Prince George’s County was sent out at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening prior to the 8:07 p.m. microburst.

For those who want to take a more active role in the wake of a natural disaster, the Office of Emergency Management wants to remind citizens that the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) offers training.
The CERT concept was developed by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) in 1985 after recognizing that citizens would have to rely on themselves during the early stages of a catastrophic disaster. The LAFD decided that some basic training in disaster survival and rescue skills would improve the ability of citizens to survive until first responders or other citizens could arrive. This training proved to be so beneficial that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) felt that the concept and program should be made available nationwide and applicable to all hazards.
With roughly 2,400 members, Prince George's County has one of the largest and fastest growing CERT programs in the nation.
Those citizens interested in receiving CERT training can email the CERT Coordinator, Calvin Hawkins at email@example.com.
